If your iPod volume is up so high that you can't hear cyclists screaming "On your left!" and ringing their bells frantically, it's too loud. Turn it down and be aware of your surroundings. The trails are meant to be shared, so share them! Walk on the right hand side and pay attention to people riding quickly on bikes trying to pass you on the left so they don't have to slam on their brakes and pray their son doesn't fly off on the back of the bike.
