I picked up these thingamabobs at the thrift store a few months back for my son’s bookshelf.  At first, I spray painted them white.  They are made of plaster and the paint I used made them look chalky.  What I wanted them to look like was high gloss lacquer.  So I set them aside until I figured out my next move.

While on vacation in NY, I spotted this silver glazed fish in one of the quant little shops on the St. Lawrence.  It was shiny, it was silver, and it had depth.  Perfect.  I didn’t take a photo of the fish, and in fact, it didn’t hit me like a ton of bricks when I saw it.  I actually got thinking about it several days later on our way back home.  A 12 hour car ride gives you plenty of time to think about the most random things.

What are these things?

Sometimes I think they look like shells.

Other times they look like an ear.

Whatever they are my son doesn’t seem to mind them because if he had I would have seen them thrown back into my craft room.

Here’s a photo (below) what they looked like before.

Here’s another thrift store find.  A gold tacky wall sconce.

This photo doesn’t even show how gold and tacky it was in person!

I spayed the entire sconce white and then glazed with brown and gray.

When you go thrifting, do you ever stop and wonder what others must be thinking to themselves as you walk away with that strange thingamabob?  I know I do.  When I see someone pick up something that I would never be caught dead bring home I drive myself crazy thinking they have this great vision for something awesome and I didn’t see it!

  • How will they use it?
  • Will they paint it some unexpected POP of color?
  • Will they tear it apart and make something even better?
  • God forbid, will they leave it like it is? {okay, that was a joke}
